Firmware on XTi and dark exposures

I have an XTi (400D) that is one year old and I have been at EC +2/3 to compensate for dark exposures. Does anyone know if the newer firmware releases address this problem. For what I have read about the firmware there doesn't seem to be any strong reason to upgrade. Any comments or suggestions.
