The flash was also very useful, so thanks for the tip on that! Trying
to expose properly with such bright backgrounds was quite challenging
(for me anyway).

I'll be going to Costa Rica, too, in a few days. And I'm also wondering if I'll have trouble with lighting. I'll be taking my 100-400 and Speedlite 430. I don't have a better beamer, though.

What technique do people use with harsh backlighting and relatively dark foregrounds, when shooting subjects at 400 or 560mm (with a TC)? I've seen a lot of pictures from Costa Rica and a majority of those taken under a dense canopy suffer from improper lighting and camera shake. I suspect just the flash wouldn't be all that effective at such distances. What kind of exposure compensation do people generally use? Would the absence of a better beamer be a deal killer?
