I purchased the 85mm 1.8 this April and it quickly became my favorite lens for tis sharpness and great bokeh. It really is a classic and one of Nikon's most well liked and respected lenses. I highly recommend it.

A bit the opposite of you, I am now on the verge of buying the 16-85. When making the decision on a wide-standard/med-tele lens, I originally thought about the very well received Tamron 17-50/2.8 as it too is very sharp and loved by pros as a great bargin. However, while the 17-50/2.8 is a better pro's choice, most of my photography is still family/vacation and the added reach of the 16-85 plus VRII outweighed, for my current needs, a faster lens. Another key part of my decision was that I purchased the 85mm 1.8 for its great portrait abilities and its speed.
