D700 has focus problems....

Its really bad. I am using 51 point focusing and placeing the focus point on my non-moving people subjects. Its so out I can not tell if its back or forward focusing its just "missing" the focus. I tired this with a 35mm 1.4, a 50mm 1.8 and a 28-120 Zoom. Surprising the zoom seemed to be the sharpest and its not reported to be the best pro lens out there...

Any thoughts on settings that could improve this. ? The light was somewhat low exposure ISO 400 f 4, side light from very large window.

I have even considered taking the camera back to the shop for a refund..
