What Would You Do?

I'm going on an Alaskan cruise in May 2009. Have a Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, which won't be long enough to get c.u. shots of wildlife. Question is this: Would you purchase a Canon 1.4 teleconverter for use with the 70-200, or purchase a Canon 100-400L?

Obviously, money is an issue in this consideration. However, it's not an insurmountable issue. Just wondering if the quality of images with the teleconverter will hold up to the quality from the 100-400 if I choose to go that route.

What would you do, and why?
