D700 vs. 5D2 AFTER READING

far too many posts indicating I have ordered a camera (5d2) that can not focus, has too much noise, offers poor IQ and an inadequate lens selection compared to Nikon I felt it was time to post something myself.

To see how bad the high ISO performance was I downloaded about 25 high ISO shots taken by various photographers (1600-25600), at various sites including several of the dpreview test shots with a 5d2 and built Noise Ninja correction curves with them. Yup, ISO 25,600 is a waste of time for anything you would put on an 18" screen or print full size ...... but strangely enough they were all in focus.

Ever watch FTV (Fashion TV)? They do special sessions on fashion photographers. Take out the MF (Medium Format) shooters who are obviously wasting their time and money shooting 40+ megapixel on portraits when 12 works fine (right?) and then count how many Nikons, Canons and Fujis are being used. Why are there more Canons in the hands of these top guys (pros) if they don't focus and are not good for portrait work?

Ever watch sports on TV? All I see is a sea of white long fat lenses. I didn't know Nikon made one of those and could not find a white Nikon lens on anyones site for sale.

I only hope that one day I can learn to be half the photographer either of these pro groups are.

I am making the jump to SLR for lanscape and travel photography which includes lots of inside stuff I used to shoot with a Fuji F31. The high ISO pictures I downloaded convinced me the 5d2 would be superb with a fast lens andf I ordered a 50 MM 1.4 to go with the kit lens. What convenced me to go with the Canon instead of the D700? Seeing what is being used by top pros on TV in Fashion and Sports. .. when the Nikonians claim that is their forte. Will I like carrying the extra weight of an SLR and lenses instead of a G9 or 10 and a small Fuji .. that remains to be seen. Will I be able to get better IQ across the spectrum from indoors relic rooms and churches to architecture and panoramic landscapes... .. I'm putting my $$ on it.
