24-70 two bad copies

Just tested (with my D700) my second copy of a 24-70 2.8, and this one is as soft as the first. I heard there were occassionally poor copies of this lens, but to get two (with serial numbers 1000 apart). I tested them both twice against an old Nikon 85. 1.4 and a sigma 105 macro - all at 5.6 and 8, (but just using the centre of the field) and the sigma was an easy winner, followed by the 85 and trailing badly and really soft were both copies of the 24-70.

Am I missing something here? Have lots of people had issues with this lens or am I just unlucky. I will try and exchange it today, although I am seriously thinking of just getting my money back and deciding on something else.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.
