difference between thin filter and regular filter

Hello all,

I have a bigma and i sometimes use it as a walk-around lens. I am looking for a protective/guard filter for it.

Question: I know wide angle is better to use thin filter to reduce flare and reflection, what about tele-zoom? does it matter if the filter is thin or just normal cheap UV protector will do??
