D40 vs. D300

Hi,

I am considering buying a D300 sometime in the near future, though I have a question. When using my D40, I can't stand changing the exposure as much as I have to. If I am indoors with some light coming through and I focus on the area of light, the interior becomes extremely dark and almost no detail is visible. The opposite happens if I focus on the interior; the light from outside becomes way over exposed. I understand this has to do with the nature of matrix-metering.

My question is, with a D300, will I notice a huge improvement in this regard? Or, do all cameras using matrix-metering work like this? If yes, is it because the metering is better?

Thanks,
Chris
