SX10 wheel of "unfortune"

For those of you have mastered the knack of using the control wheel can you provide some help on how to use it. When I use the scene mode it is nearly impossible to use the wheel to lock onto the mode I want. Is there an alternative to using the wheel?

Again, I am impressed with image quality and stabilization after a few days use.
