Whatever the case, it would be within the DRIVER where the bit-size would be determined. Last year when Epson announced the drivers that would be released for OS X Leopard, one of the features listed was 16-bit printing for the 3800. I haven't gone to Leopard yet so I can't attest to how good/bad it may be.

I know Lightroom 2 has an option to check for 16-bit printing. Photoshop CS3 supports 16 bit files, so if the PRINT DRIVER can handle it - you shouldn't even need CS4 if you get the right drivers. Check out the link I posted - there should be more info there.
