My 40D shutter failed at ~15-20k shutter actuations

Just got off the phone with Canon service.
My 11 month old 40D with 15-20k (guess based on the number of files I have stored on my HD) acctuations failed 1 week ago today.
I sent it in and the phone rep said that it had a failed shutter.
Not exactly the pillar of reliability I would expect.
I wonder if the 50D has the same system?
