50D versus 40D, you be the judge.

Many thanks to Olga Johnson for giving us the heads-up regarding the 50D shots at Imaging Resource.

Below is a comparison of the Imaging Resource file for both the 40D and 50D at ISO-1600. Note, the 50D file I chose for this comparison has NR turned OFF.

Anyway, I did the same thing to both files that I always do when comparing camera outputs. One file is interpolated up and the other file interpolated down to the arithmetic average size of the two files and then USM (325,0.2,0) is applied to both results using Photoshop (v8); below are 100 percent crops from the resultant images.

Other than one very quick comment I'm not going to say anything. IMO the resolution difference between the two cameras has an interesting "noise twist" to it. Now I've already done this exercise at home this but "you" might (and might not) find it interesting to crop off the lower portion (i.e. the 40D grab) and apply a second or third dose of USM (just to the 40D file) and then compare sharpness and noise to that of the 50D file (keeping in mind these files have been interpolated to the average size of the two).

So, have a look, think about noise (chroma noise, etc.), and then let's see what you think.
