Assuming you used the same shutter speed, the D700 image is 2/3-stop
underexposed with the f/8 aperture, when f/6.3 was used for the other
images. This is going to increase noise in the D700's files.

Nah, I shot in aperture priority to allow the camera to expose properly. There is no underexposure evident here - and I shot the different apertures to give the D700 a chance for a little more DOF to be more comparable. The histograms were very similar.
