Re: Canon SX1 IS Not Available In North America
In reply to b534202, Sep 24, 2008

Canon opened a new manufacturing plant for CMOS sensors recently. It makes sense to bring the factory up to speed in a controlled fashion. According to canonrumors.com we may see 3 P&S cameras with CMOS in the spring, including SX1 in USA. SX1 will be available in December in Europe (costing more than the G10).

It remains to be seen if these tiny CMOS sensors have a noise advantage. The SX1 and the SX10 both are specified to ISO 1600, and the highest ISO on a P&S is plain unusable traditionally. The main trick of the CMOS sensors may be the HD video, as it takes considerable data flow to offload 2 mpix 30 times per second (VGA is just 0.3 mpix per frame).
