Successfully corrected D80 back focus
Sep 15, 2008

Over the past year or so, I seemed to be getting an unusually large number of back focused shots of soccer using my 70-200 2.8 VR on my D80 body. Specifically, I'd have pictures where a player about 6 feet behind the intended subject would be in focus, which was getting really frustrating.

Given that my camera is out of warranty and assuming that a Nikon service center could remedy anything I could screw up, I adjusted the autofocus myself in about ten minutes and am extremely happy - so happy that I mounted my dusty TC-20E II on my 70-200 2.8 today and will use it at my next soccer game.

I used the test patter found here http://focustestchart.com/chart.html along with instructions found here http://www.leongoodman.com/d70focus.html . Of course, use at your own risk.

BTW, the intent of this post is not to stir up a discussion regarding which pattern is best or whether you have to do it in daylight or otherwise - just that for those who are disappointed that their D80 back focuses, you can do it quite easily if you aren't squeamish doing it yourself. I didn't tape my mirror up to perform the adjustment - I used a paper clip to gently hold up the mirror while I used a 2mm allen key to adjust the back AF mirror focus peg. Ten minutes and six pictures using three lenses game me the result I was looking for.

Hope this helps someone... Duncan
