Pentaprism vs. Pentamirror
In reply to Gerrit Smit, Sep 13, 2008

Pentaprisms are built from solid blocks of optical glass whose walls are mirror coated (silvered?)? Compared to pentamirrors which are shaped metal surfaces that are otherwise hollow, the pentaprism is optically stable over temperature changes because they are basically solid blocks of optical glass. Therefore, the image you see of the focusing plane is always very accurate and sharp no matter the temperature and not subject to mis-registration due to bumps and shocks. Pentaprisms weigh more, so that has to be accounted for in the total weight of the camera. They are more expensive to produce as well.
