Rangefinder revival. Just a thought.
Sep 12, 2008

Panasonic has announced the G1, a 'sort of' digital rangefinder equivalent.
Personally I find it interesting.

Call me a lunatic, dreamer, idealist or just a nutcase but I think it would be nice if Nikon would give a response to such a camera:

Use the D90 DX sensor - or a similar one - which provides capabilities for live view and contrast AF.

Remove the mirrorbox, pentamirror and AF module of D90. Keep all the other features and elements possible from D90. Battery, buttons, display, knobs etc. and make it as compact as possible.
Use Nikon S-mount bayonet and flange focal distance specs.

Develop lenses for this DX 'rangefinder' format (RX? heh) and/or provide in-the-box an adapter for current Nikon-F mount lenses (it would accept Nikkor or 3rd party DX/FX lenses just like D40/x/60 do)

It sounds simple, I know that it's not. There are tons of other details in such a conversion.
How much will it cost?
No idea.
Would it kill the D90 or D60 sales?
No idea.

But I know I'd love to have the option for a cam like that.
Does anybody else?
