S100FS in-camera distortion correction
Sep 2, 2008

I wasn't sure if anyone ever verified that the camera does some distortion correction, so I figured I'd give it a go. Here are two images taken from the same spot, first is the JPEG straight from the camera, and the second converted with ACR:

JPEG from camera:

Converted from raw:

The original size JPEG verison is the actual file from the camera, the raw version is a 14 meg lossless PNG. It's obvious when you flip between both that the camera is definitely correcting the distortion, at least partially. It doesn't seem to do any correction at 400mm, and none is needed apparently.

I was originally checking to see how JPEG and raw compares in regards to hot pixels on long exposures, so they're 13 second exposures at F/11 (which is why the original size images are a bit soft) and ISO 100. Lighting was a single CFL. ACR seems to do a pretty good job of reducing hot pixels, but it'd be nice if the camera had an option for automatic dark frame subtraction.
