The ultimate fail (should I

I crave the ultimate image quality, which is what lead me to a dslr in the first place. But I am not really interested about learning how to shoot manual at the moment. I had a 350D for about 2 years and have recently upgraded to a 450d.
I love the quality of my images, but I am finding that they are far too soft for my tastes. My images do not have that razor sharp quality like my old point and shoots used to have.
Then I read that point and shoots generally are sharper than a dslr
Finally, I only use the auto mode or the other 'auto' scene modes. I also feel like I am not taking pictures like I used to because the camera is so large.
I also dearly miss being able to take video
You guys are such pro photographers, and I would like some advice before I do anything drastic.
I have been eyeing the future g10 or 11 powershot
Anyone have any ideas? I feel like such a failure for owning such a nice camera and wanting to "downgrade" from it : (
