450D focus: unreliable
Aug 15, 2008

Hi there,

you might not want to hear it; but I tested another 450D-IS kit.
Serial numbers significantly higher than the first ones.

Kit lens does not have "Made in Japan" printed on the front, but on the back (!).

Went through my standard brick wall test (sigh) testing each AF point individually at 18mm f3.5.

All shots razor sharp (what a lens!).

Happily went out shooting "normal" street scenes, mostly house fronts.
Now: some 15% of all shots are out of focus at 18mm f3.5, some more, some less.

If I was shooting at f8 or P-mode, I would maybe only notice it in half of the cases due to bigger DOF.

So it's down to what many people wrote already, you have a "higher than normal amount of misfocused shots".

I'm not gonna try to prove that what I say is correct.

My conclusion is; there is a systematic problem with the 450D or its kit lens.
It is not batch issues.
It is not the usual calibration issue.
It happens seemingly at random, mainly at 18mm f3.5, distance > 2m.

If you shoot at smaller apertures (as normal), bigger DOF could be "masking" the problem.

Great camera. But with that AF. Sorry; no.
