I do have the same problem for my 1DMII with new 580EXII. I have two 580EXII and one 550EX that 550EX can mount on the camera body perfectly well. As for 580EXII,

the flash will not talk to the camera occasionally. It appears to me that the quick release on 580EXII does not mount well on the shoe mount of my camera. If I tilt up the body of the flash from the front, the flash communication to the camera will come back again. I think Canon should address this problem for future DSRL camera.

Also, if you use the flash with Gary Fong's lightsphere, be careful not to turn your flash head that often like the way Gary suggests people to do in his demo video. It may damage the shoe mount on your camera if you turn the flash head all the time. This is my opinion.
