Curving the sensor - incredible potential?

On the bbc.co.uk website 7th August in the news, science and technology section there is an article about new camera technology described in the journal "Nature".

The camera sensor is not flat but shaped like the retina in the eye which minimises distortion and focusing issues at the periphery.

I have not seen the Nature journal so I so not know whether the article expands on the summary on the BBC website at:

I would be grateful for any further information and views. It looks to me as though this may "change the shape of cameras" in the future although there are clearly a lot of technical issues.

David
