D300 bit size in photoshop

D300 bit size in photoshop

Hi All, Sorry if i seem a bit thick with this question but i was wondering why D300 pictures open as 8 Bit pictures in photoshop CS3 when the camera is 12 Bit. Is it because CS3 is only either 8 Bit or 16 Bit so they can only open as 8 Bit.
