The reason why large areas of red are difficult is that digital cameras overexpose them. The work-around is to set the EV compensation to -1.3, even -2.

What may contribute to the difficulty that DCs have with reds is, they have an infrared-blocking filter in them these days, which may also reduce the transmission of visible red, hence the metering system gets it wrong when red is the dominant colour in a picture.

Come to think of it, when you convert a picture to B&W, the reds come out not medium grey, but nearly black.
