AF lenses work with the in-body focusing motor of cameras like the D50, 70, 70s, 80, 100, 200,300, etc.

AF-S lenses have a built-in focusing motor in the lens and can focus on cameras like the D40, 40x and 60. These cameras do not have an internal motor (to reduce size, weight and cost) and rely on AF-S lenses for autofocus capability.

AF lenses will work on the 40/x/60, but cannot autofocus.

The hope here is the D80's successor will have a built-in motor so you can use older, cheaper, non-AF-S lenses that will autofocus.
