I know how you feel and totally agree with you. 70-200 2.8 IS (I like the idea it becomes an indoor lens agian) and primes are all I'll be using when and if (really depends how good it will be) I get 5D2. I will not get, and really think people should refrain from getting, the current EF standard zoom lenses. These are not worthwhile "upgrades" even on full frame after been spoiled by the 17-55. I do think Canon will intruduce a new standard L zooms soon, if not together with the 5D2 introduction. How about F2.8, IS and even better IQ? They need have all cylinders fired to get people to stay in the camp. I'd like to see better UWA zoom or prime lenses like Nikon's offing but I'll settle for 17-40 it does not happen.

I'm going to upgrade to full frame in the day new 5D arrive in any
store. I'm aware that there's no answer to EF-S 17-55mm in ff world.
EF-S 10-22mm is so-so (please don't bash me), but EF-S 17-55mm is a
jewel. I'll pay that price because I shoot film 25 years and after 2
years with crop I still think it's not for me. I'm going to primes. I
had choose EF 85mm f1.2 L, EF 35mm f1.4 L and CZ 50mm f1.4. I didn't
decide which UWA, the best choice is CZ 21mm at a premium price but
CZ 18mm is a good bet. So are CZ 24mm and EF 24mm f1.4 L. I will keep
the EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS as my only zoom.
Good lucky

I could perhaps be lured to a modern variant of the 5D (call it
5DMII) from the 40D, in search of even better low-light, low-noise,
high-ISO performance. But, I'm simply spoiled by the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8
IS USM lens, which cannot be used with FF bodies. I've grown to love
the combination of f/2.8 and IS in the same standard zoom lens.
Canon's 24-70 is f/2.8, but not IS. Also, its tested performance is
not as good as the 17-55 (or the 24-105 f/4 for that matter). If I
had a FF body (or even 1.3x crop body), I certainly would be
interested in an updated/improved IS version of the 24-70 f/2.8 lens.
Until then, I'm compelled to keep updating the best 1.6x crop body
whenever new ones become available (so I can use the only f/2.8, IS,
standard zoom lens Canon has).
