The mirror of the D700 is clearly smaller than that of D3. It is hinged within a different kind of supportive frame too that is thicker along the edges.

In practial shooting I haven't paid any attention to the lack of frame coverage. The only time I actually noticed this was using my 8 mm f/2.8 Fisheye-Nikkor the image circle of which appeared cut off at top or bottom. Other than with this lens, you'll adjust quickly to the camera's way of "seeing". And there is always LiveView for the cases in which exact framing is required. LiveView by the way is the only method of getting a precise 100% preview of what the camera records. Even a 100% finder will NOT guarantee this, and it should be food for thought that the manufacturers always state "approx. 100%".
