I own both lenses

However, I owned the 70-200 f2.8 IS for a few years before getting the 100-400 IS. During that time, I used a Canon 2x or 1.4x converter to handle the need for longer reach. I am using the 100-400 a bit more lately only because I mostly shoot wildlife outdoors. I was a bit skeptical of the push-pull design. But I have gotten used to it and haven't thought twice about it.

The 70-200 does an admirable job with the teleconverters. I do find that I need both lenses since I do shoot a fair share indoors or in low light (and occasional portraits) and that's when the f2.8 comes in handy. If you can swing it, get both lenses.
