17-55 f2.8 v 24-70 f2.8

Hi,
Within next 4 weeks or so I am about to place an order for a D700 with 14-24 f2.8.
I can get this lens cheaper this way (works out at £945 UK) so wil purchase the 24-70 seperate.
I have a D200 and am very happy with the 17-55 but was considering the D300 when along came the D700......
Anyway- Is the 24-70 technically and optically on a par with the 17-55? Heard some negative views on it but mostly positive.
Did a search but was difficult to search on this subject properley.
Your views would be welcome.
