EF 70-200 L vs F-S 55-250 for XSi
May 27, 2008

Any opinions on these two lenses? Both seem pretty cheap as far as lenses go.

I'm new to SLRs. The only lens I have so far is the included lens kit. I need some kind of zoom lens for vacation photos, kids, wildlife, etc. I don't want to spend a fortune until my skills improve. It would be nice to have a single lens that I could use for just about anything.

I've read the reviews, I've seen plenty of good picts with each. Here are some of the pros and cons I can see.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM ($560)
+ Full frame potential future use.
+ L-Quality lens
+ Non-rotating front end

  • No IS

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS ($275)
+ Cheep
+ Bigger range, less lens switching

  • Less quality

I think it's coming down to a better lens vs IS. Should I go with the cheepo lens and save for a L lens w/IS? Is there another inexpensive option I should consider?

Also, do to the 1.6x crop factor, is the EF 70-200 the equivalent of a EF-S 112 - 320?

Thanks for any opinions!
