Sunset filter, ND, and polarizer...?

Ok, a friend of mine got back from Maine not too long ago and as he was showing me his photos we came across one of a lighthouse, well Portland Head Light, to be exact. His shot looked amazing. I asked him to put it on the net but he refuses to do so. In any case, I asked him how he obtained such and amazing shot and he told me that he was using a 28-80mm lens, a ND filter, a sunset filter, and a polarizer all at the same time. That seems like an insane combination of things to me. Would this combo not equal a bad idea? I mean first of all with all of that you would have to take some insanely long exposure even in the middle of the day would you not, and you would most definitely need a tripod I am assuming. What do you guys think about this? Oh and he was not shooting digital. Would the same filters have the same effect on a digital camera or is that inadvisable?
