Tamron AF 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 VC

Does anyone have this lens? I was in a camera shop asking for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS, and they suggest me to check out that lens as well.
I don't like switch lens often, so probably the Tamron 28-300 one would be a good general purpose lens? The 18-55 IS kit lens doesn't have enough zoom!
The problem is, I want to stay with Canon brand lens, but they assure me that Tamron is a good brand as well. Plus, a Canon brand 28-300mm costs almost $3000 and much larger.
So what do you guys think? Does anyone here own one?
