The only thing worse is a black dog with bright white patches:

I've probably had the most success in the sun, but front-lit. Backlight is impossible without flash fill. Frontlit sunlight can create highlights that help keep the black fur from becoming completely featureless. I have also had some success in shade, if I hit the exposure correctly.

Keep trying--it's worth the effort for the good ones that you will get.
