How to photograph a black dog?

I have been working on learning my D80.
I have a black dog and have been trying to figure out how to photograph him properly. Sometimes I have decent results and sometimes not. I used to have a yellow lab and it was very easy to get good photos of him.
The black seems to make it much harder to see the expressions in his eyes and it seems like I always blow the highlights. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions
