Inexpensive close up lens/filters any good? - f717

I'm eyeballing a set of Ace macro "close-up" lenses on Ebay - 4 for like $16 including shipping.
Are these a total waste of time, or are they actually decent?
I'm not doing shots for "Surgery Today", or anything, but I don't need garbage either...
Thoughts?
