what makes images "pop"?

Kind of hard to describe the effect I am thinking of, but I know it when I see it. It most often seems to be in evidence from the L primes, and the key characteristic is a kind of three dimensional effect, where a central subject of the image seems to stand off the print or screen. I think this is what is sometimes referred to as "pop," and I am wondering what properties of an image create this effect? Color, contrast, sharpness? And why are some lenses so good at this while others are not?

Thanks,

Chris
