Photography is WORTHLESS???
Apr 30, 2008

As much as I love photography as a hobbie, I can't help but think that in the true sense, I mean in artistic terms, that it is worthless.

I have probably seen millions and millions of photos on this website alone and I often think they are great but when I am away from the computer how many photos can I remember? How many stay in my mind? Hardly any.

Photography seems to be like porn, providing instant gratification but providing nothing that lasts. Very few, if any, photos move me beyond the instant.

Great films and literature etc, stay with you, live inside you, but photography doesn't seem to do this. It is a snack, NOT a meal.

I also can't help but think that very little skill is involved. Most of the time I think, 'Wow, you have been to nice places' or 'How lucky you are that x happened in front of you'. What I mean is, is that often the subject matter/event is the real star, anyone one could have taken the photo.

Please, do me a favour, close your eyes, what photos can you see????
