Temperamental USB
Apr 25, 2008

I have a Shutle PC that is about 4 years old that has 4 USB 2.0 ports and because of the limited physical space in the Shuttle I have relied a lot on a number of external USB devices (hard drives, DVD burners, hubs, iPods, printers etc).

Unfortunately the more I use these USB devices (particularly the large hard drives) the more unreliable the USB connection seems to be. It used to be that rebooting would fix any problem but now I find that I can have an ongoing problem for long periods like a week.

I have checked under the Device Manager to make sure that there are no problems and have never had a software issue that I can see. The last major issue I had I resolved by swapping the USB cable, even though the supposed faulty cable works with other devices on other computers.

Am I the only one that has temperamental USB performance and does anyone else have any ideas on how to improve this.

Thanks
Nigel.
