Soft proofing: When to use 'Preserve RGB Numbers?'

In PS CS3, custom softproofing (View > Proof Setup > Custom) offers the option to "Preserve RGB Numbers". When should that option be checked? I sometimes get better agreement between the softproof and print when it is checked.

I usually do not check that option, but use instead Rendering Intent: Relative Colorimetric", and "Black Point Compensation." Selecting "Preserve RGB Numbers" grays out the Rendering Intent and Black Point Compensation options.
