Leica M8 - Why are there so many used ones on sale?
Apr 15, 2008

I just looked at the website of a London dealer; he's offering two Leica M8 cameras (one black and one chrome) in mint- condition for a little under £2000 - the cheapest I've seen. Other UK Leica dealers always seem to have at least one M8 in their used stock. My question is; Why? Why are there so many S/H M8s for sale? This never happened with the Epson RD-1 - a used RD-1 or RD-1s is very hard to find. Try finding a used Nikon D300 or D3; virtually impossible! But used Leica M8s seem to be plentiful - at least here in the UK. Why? It's a unique camera with no competition. Agreed, it has its quirks and idiosyncracies, and maybe that puts some users off. But, who would spend £3000+ on a camera without realising what it is and what it does? If I were Leica I'd be very concerned about this. I bought my M8 some four months ago; it was about a year old and 'used'. However, it looked liked it had never been out of its box - even the battery and strap were still sealed. Any thoughts on this?
