Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) + 450D (Rebel Xsi) = problem?

Hi!
Is it just me, or doesn't the EOS 450D work under Windows Vista having Service Pack 1 installed?
Each time I connect, it starts installing "Canon digital camera" device drivers for about one second, then Vista decides to change to a "Digital Still Camera" (generic?) and it fails.
Can't use EOS utility or anything. The camera can't speak to Visa at all.
I don't want to transfer images (I have a much faster card reader for that) - I want to use the remote capture feature!
Canon says "talk to Microsoft". Microsoft says "talk to Canon".
Own the EOS 450D? What is your experience?
