I owned both at the same time with a crop camera

I owned the 24-70 for approximately 1 year before I added the 17-55 for the extra 7 mm on the wide end. I already owned the 24-105 and did not think the IS would be that critical to me on a fast lens. My mistake. Aside from my primes, the 17-55 is the first lens that I reach for. It was the only lens that I used on my last vacation. The 2.8 is great. The 2.8 and the IS is amazing. You can use a large apt to stop the action of a small apt with the IS to get interior shots without a tripod all in one lens. After owning both the 17-55 and the 24-70 together for about 6 months, I sold the 24-70 because I rarely used it once I had the 17-55. I am hoping that Canon adds IS to the next version of the 24-70 before I decide that I need a full frame camera.

I think you will be very happy with the 17-55
