For a single lens solution, consider the 24-105L F4 IS. I hear amazing things about the 17-55 2.8 IS lens, but most of my shots are longer than 55mm. I'm on a crop body too, btw. Anyway, just wanted to give you a different take.

I wonder if a good solution isn't a 17-85, 50mm 1.8, and 35mm f2? It really depends on your style. That gives you a convenient zoom with a couple of decent primes. Or maybe a 28-135mm + a 70-300mm? Gives you a lot of range. Or 28-135 + 17-40L.

At any rate, always nice to have some money to spend on lenses. For me, where I'm at... if I could... I'd drop it all plus a hundred on the 35mm F1.4L.
