Sports and travel lens
Mar 23, 2008

I just sold my Sigma 100-300 F4. The lens was fine for static objects, but focus was very inconsistent @F4 on 3 different bodies. So now I'm looking for a new lens.

I will use this lens (just like the Sigma) for sports (especially football), travel, wildlife, landscape and some portrait photography on my 40D. There isn't a lens like the Sigma 100-300 F4 from Canon so I have to come up with something else.
Here are some of the options I'm looking at.

  • Canon 70-200mm L F2.8 (IS or non-IS)

A little short but F2.8. I expect spot on focus accuracy for sports. IS is not necessary for sports but would be nice (if it's as good as the IS on my 24-105L) for travel, landscape and portrait photography. I would eventually add the 300mm F4 IS (but not very soon).

  • Canon 300mm F4 L IS

Great for sports (I would have to get used to using a prime). Not very useful/flexible for traveling.

  • Canon 200mm L F2.8

Light, fast and reasonably priced. Good for sports and light for traveling. Although not sure about the focal length and how much I would use that particular focal length.

  • Canon 70-200mm F4 + Canon 300 F4 L IS

Almost the same price as a Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS but I would loose F2.8.

Please let me know what you think. What would be a good suggestions (of course all lenses mentioned are fine lenses) for my purposes.
Other options would also be welcome.

Thanks!

Tim
