Prime Shooting?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why are some people taking pictures only with primes, if zooms are so much easier to handle?

You have to carry more lenses around with you, and that might be cumbersome, so what is the advantage of using mainly primes? Are they so much better than zooms? Do they give you a more artistic advantage over zooms?

And which are the primes that one would need to cover the basic range? Any suggestions?
