Non-RAID Multi Bay HDD Storage

Greetings

I'm rapidly running out of storage (and desk) space and I'm thinking of getting a multiple bay HDD solution, to save on space, cables, power bricks etc. I can't get my head around RAID and want to manage my backups myself with all drives showing up individually. I'd really appreciate any guidance/suggestions on this kind of solution, or if there's a better way.
