Question about D300's MB-D10 Battery Pack

It says that I either need an EN-EL4a or 8 AA batteries to shoot at 8 fps with the battery pack.
The EN-EL4a will last for probably thousands of shots for sure. How about the AA batteries? How many shots do you guys get on average when shooting at 8 fps with the 8 AA batteries?
