Is D80 photo noise at high ISO, really a problem for low light photography ??

I'm trying to make my mind up about purchasing a DSLR and thought that I'd really like to get a D80 until I saw the post about the problems with noise associated with ISO's of 800 or greater. I'd really like to be able to take low light shots without the noise. Some post say that it is a sensor problem ( i.e. the CMOS sensors doing better than the CCD sensors). I don't really want to lug around a d300 ( due to the weight and costs) and would like to have the features available in the D80. Is this an issue of my having to use software to reduce the noise on the low light shots or is there a Nikon option out there ?

I'd appreciate any opinions or references to other posts. I'm hoping that Canon is not the only option ( no offense to Canon owners).

Thanks for you time and thoughts.
