Using SC-29 off camera

Please be kind, I’m fairly new at this. I have a D200 with 18X200/ SB800/ and just bought an SC-29. I see a lot of pros hand hold the SB800 while taking shots connected by the SC-29. I’ve tried this and to be honest it’s not working for me. I have my right hand on the camera and left hand holding the flash. I would normally use my left hand to adjust the lens but I now have a flash in it and it makes it VERY awkward to adjust the lens. Another thing is after the shot I don’t have anywhere to hang the flash as I walk around the room with the camera on my neck. Please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
